Tips for Working With a General Contractor

Taking on a home renovation project can be intimidating, and even if you have a clear idea of what you want to be done to your home, chances are you have no clue on how to go about achieving it. This is where a construction contractor, like Blacktop Construction comes into play.

What does a general contractor do?

A GC is a professional in the construction industry that oversees construction projects. A good contractor is the one that communicates with architects, structural engineers, and the workers on the job site, in addition to any government entities that provide any permits or inspects for code violations. Some contractors work for large construction companies; while others work independently and will hire subcontractors that will oversee such tasks as plumbing, carpentry, electrical, roofing, etc.

Before any ground is broken, you need to make sure that you hire the best contractor to oversee the entire process.

  1. Using referrals. Never hire a contractor solely based on advertising, always request referrals and look for reviews on their workmanship.

  1. Look for licensed contractors. Most municipalities don’t require you to hire use a licensed contractor, however, when dealing with larger projects, make sure that they do have one, as licensed contractors will have both liability insurance and worker’s compensation for their employees, that will also cover you if injuries are incurred while on the job site.

  1. Ask to see examples of similar projects to your own. If you hire a contractor for a big remodeling job, it is important to confirm that you are happy with the end product. When reviewing examples of previous work, make sure to ask plenty of questions, and never be afraid to point things out that you are unsure of. So if you see evidence of bad workmanship, look for a different contractor; as you want someone that will pay attention to even the smallest details.
